Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes to lead Delaware (1‑0). The Delaware defense forced five turnovers and held the New York (0‑1) offense to 203 yards. Brees was 13‑for‑25 overall for 222 yards. LaDainian Tomlinson scored two touchdowns.

Pittsburgh (1‑0) won on a 44-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell as time expired. Richmond (0‑1) held Pittsburgh to 22 yards rushing, but Chad Pennington threw for 250 yards for the winners. Marshall Faulk ran for 113 yards in a losing effort.

Chris Cooley put Washington (1‑0) in front for good with a 24-yard touchdown reception with 2:29 left in the third quarter. Duce Staley added an insurance touchdown. Morten Andersen made a pair of 47-yard field goals for Baltimore (0‑1).

Moe Williams ran for a one-yard touchdown with 1:07 left to give Philadelphia (1‑0) the win. The decisive drive began on the Philadelphia 32 with 3:43 to go. There were six lead changes. Atlantic City (0‑1) carried a 20‑17 lead into the last quarter.

Syracuse (1‑0) took a 14‑10 lead on the second of Javon Walker’s two touchdown receptions. Brian Westbrook ran for 152 yards and two second half touchdowns. For Albany (0‑1) Corey Dillon ran for 160 yards, and Trent Green threw for 311.
