Lakers Roll Past Syracuse, 33-11

by Nonnie Abu’Daba
In a possible preview of the EFL championship game, the Philadelphia Lakers (8-3) rolled past the visiting Syracuse Crush (8-3), 33-11. In an atypical display of the jitters, Syracuse quarterback Patrick Ramsey was intercepted twice in the first half.

The first interception, by linebacker Mike Vrabel, came on the game’s very first play from scrimmage. Vrabel returned the ball to the Crush 17, and five plays later Jamal Lewis scored on a 4-yard run to put Philadelphia up, 7-0. The Lakers would not relinquish the lead.

Looking not much like a team with the league’s best record entering the game, Syracuse also fumbled three times in the first half. They did manage to recover all three.

Lewis was the offensive star of the game with 161 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. His second score, a 40-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, extended the Lakers’ lead to 14-0. Early in the third quarter Philadelphia quarterback Tommy Maddox connected with Plaxico Burress on a pretty 45-yard scoring bomb to make it 24-3. Matt Bryant was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts for the Lakers.
